Welcome to LabXSpec4

Fourth International Workshop on Laboratory-Based High Energy-Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy

17–19 March 2026, MPI-CEC, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany

We are excited to welcome you to the fourth International Workshop on Laboratory-Based High Energy-Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy — a forum dedicated to the latest developments in laboratory-based, high energy-resolution X-ray spectrometry and its scientific applications. This workshop is a continuation of the workshops organised in Helsinki, Berlin and Budapest.

Building on the success of the previous three workshops in Helsinki, Berlin and Budapest, this edition focuses on further developing instrumentation and sample environments for the soft (100–1000 eV), tender (1–5 keV) and hard (≥5 keV) X-ray regimes. The workshop provides a unique platform to discuss the challenges and innovations involved in creating laboratory setups that enhance the capabilities of in-house X-ray absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopy using stand-alone laboratory instrumentation. Further advancing these capabilities while ensuring high data quality will alleviate the need for synchrotron radiation beam time.

The applications of laboratory-based in-house X-ray absorption (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) presented at the workshop span materials science, catalysis, energy research, geosciences and more. Furthermore, theory-driven analysis, data curation and reference database development are receiving increasing attention, with the aim of fostering robust, high-quality spectroscopic workflows.

LabXSpec4 aims to advance academic research and industrial engagement by promoting shared expertise and collaborative growth.
